The Tip Formula
Tip Amount = Bill × (Tip% ÷ 100)
Total = Bill + Tip Amount
Per Person = Total ÷ Number of People
Common Tip Percentages
- 10% — Poor service or counter service
- 15% — Standard / average service
- 18% — Good service (US restaurant default)
- 20% — Excellent service
- 25%+ — Outstanding or special occasions
Worked Example
Bill: $85 | Tip: 18% | Party of 4
- Tip = $85 × 0.18 = $15.30
- Total = $100.30
- Per person = $100.30 ÷ 4 = $25.08
Quick Mental Math Trick
For 20%: move the decimal one place left (10%), then double it.
$85 → $8.50 → double = $17 tip. Done in seconds.
