The Big Three Formats
According to the Mozilla Developer Network (MDN), choosing the right image format drastically affects page rendering speed.
- JPG (JPEG): The old reliable. Great for complex photographs with millions of colors. Uses lossy compression, meaning it sacrifices some quality for smaller file sizes. Does NOT support transparency.
- PNG: Uses lossless compression. Best for logos, icons, and images containing text. Crucially, it supports transparent backgrounds. The downside? Huge file sizes.
- WebP: Developed by Google, WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression, AND transparency. It is typically 25-35% smaller than comparable PNGs and JPGs.
Which Should You Use?
For modern web development, WebP is the undisputed champion. It offers the quality of a PNG with a file size smaller than a JPG. Almost all modern browsers natively support it.
If you have a folder full of PNGs slowing down your site, you can instantly convert them using our free Image Converter. Simply drag, drop, and convert to WebP in your browser.
